Good Enough - Part Two
I tried to capture the feeling of the Walker Family Bickering... hopefully I succeeded...

Good Enough - Part Two

"Okay, mom, out with it, what's wrong?" Kitty asked.

"Nothing," Nora said, waving away her concern.

"Don't pull that," Kitty said. "Something is wrong, you're upset. Why?"

Nora sighed. "I talked to Ryan earlier this week," she admitted. "I invited him to dinner tonight, and I'd hoped he would come."

"What were you thinking?" Sarah asked from the doorway. "Mom, didn't his dad say..."

"His dad lied to him," Nora said. "The man told him we didn't want anything to do with him. The poor boy thought we didn't want him."

"But you didn't know that, you just barged right in like it was your business!" Tommy put in.

"Mom, it's bad enough you have to be in the thick of our lives, you're going to do it to him, too?" Kevin added.

"You have a right to know him and he has a right to know you," Nora insisted. "But he's not here, so obviously..."

"Obviously you pushed, mom!" Sarah said. "You always push!"

Justin just turned away from the whole mess, wanting to tell them all to just shut up and think of it from their newfound brother's point of view. Instead he headed into the living room, noticing headlights pulling up as he did. He took a look out the window and saw an unfamiliar jeep parked out front. After a moment, the guy in it climbed out and started up the front walk. When he saw the apprehension on the kid's face, he glanced towards the kitchen, and the continuing arguement, then went and opened the door, stepping outside just as Ryan got up to the porch. "Ryan, right?" he asked.

"Yeah," Ryan replied.

"I'm Justin, one of your newfound siblings," he said. "The others are in there reading our mom the riot act for getting pushy and scaring you off," he added.

Ryan sighed. "I just had a hard time believing she could be genuine. Who wants the product of their late husband's infidelity around?"

"My mother," Justin said, shrugging. He sat down and gestured for Ryan to do the same. "I think she figures that you're our family, so as far as she's concerned your part of her family. She means well."

"My mother drove her own kids away, so she wasn't the type to accept someone else's kid," Ryan said, sitting down.

"We're a... weird family," Justin admitted. "But we do love eachother. Even if you can't always tell," he added as a particularly loud yell came from inside.

"Well, like I told your mom, it's better to yell and scream at eachother and get it over with, then to bottle it up until you're ready to literally kill eachother," Ryan said.

"I think you just might survive this dinner," Justin said, nodding. "You wanna try?"

"What the hell," Ryan agreed, getting up.

They headed inside, and Justin noticed Ryan was slowly looking around, like he was trying to get a feel of the situation. "Guys, enough! You're gonna make him think we're all lunatics," Justin said as they got there.

"You came," Nora said, smiling.

"What's the worst that could happen, a bunch people I don't know, and who don't me, decide they don't like me?" Ryan replied, trying to sound flippant, though they could all tell he was nervous.

"We all hate eachother half the time, so it wouldn't mean anything anyway," Tommy said.

"On mom's right are Kitty and Tommy," Justin said. "And on her left are Sarah and Kevin."

"Hey," Ryan said.

"Dinner's almost ready," Nora said. "I hope you like Spaghetti?"

"That's fine with me," Ryan said, then took a deep breath. "At least it's normal. One of my first meals with my foster family was Thai and I didn't know what half of it was," he admitted, relaxing slightly as Kitty and Tommy laughed.

"I don't think I've ever had Thai," Sarah said.

"Neither had I until then," Ryan said. "But it's good, one of my favorites now."

"We'll have to remember that," Tommy said.

"Is there anything I can do to help?" Ryan asked.

"No, you're a guest tonight," Nora said.

"You could help me keep Kitty far from the food," Justin said, catching his sister's wrist as she reached for one of the jars of spice. "Unless you enjoy food poisoning."

"I am not that bad!" Kitty protested. "I'm really not," she told Ryan.

"Last person who said that to me?" Ryan said, relaxing a little more. "Food poisoning. 3 times before she stopped asking me to try her cooking."

"Why did you keep trying it?" Kevin asked. "I would have started saying 'No way in hell' after the first time, in fact I did with Kitty."

"I didn't want to hurt her feelings," Ryan said, shrugging. "And she really was trying."

"Kitty tries, too," Sarah said. "To poison us."

"Oh ha ha, very funny," Kitty said.

"Not everyone can be a good cook," Kevin said diplomatically. "Some are better at making paste than gravy."

"That was once and I was 12!" Kitty protested.

Sarah rolled her eyes and stole a quick glance towards Ryan, smiling when she saw he looked more amused than horrified. "Come on, come on, we should play nice," she said.

"Yeah, we don't wanna scare Ryan off before he starts being our target," Tommy joked.

"Do your worst," Ryan replied with a grin.

"Give us time, we'll find one thing to never let you live down," Kevin promised.

"Trust me, there's plenty to choose from," Ryan replied.

"So, come on, tell us about you," Sarah said. "Are you in school?"

"Taking a year off to make some decisions," Ryan replied.

"What kind of decisions?" Tommy asked.

"Some stuff happened, things changed between applying and now," Ryan said, hedging around it. "But right now the plan is for me to start next fall at UC Berkeley."

"What happened?" Sarah asked.

"I'd rather not talk about it," Ryan said, choosing his words carefully. "No offense, to any of you, but... I don't really know you, and it's kind of personal."

"Of course," Nora said.

"Okay, so... tell us something else," Kitty said. "Something you think we should know."

"Okay," Ryan said, pausing for a long moment. "I... I'm really not a big talker," he finally confessed.

"Oh, we'll have to change that or you'll never get a word in edgewise," Sarah said.

"I'm kinda used to that," Ryan said. "My foster brother never shuts up, even when he's suppossedly asking my opinion."

"Are you seeing anyone?" Justin asked.

"Not at the moment," Ryan said. "Me and relationships tend to not... get along." He noticed everyone glance at Kevin, who rolled his eyes.

"Until fairly recently, I... had some problems with relationships," Kevin said.

"Serial dater," Kitty explained.

"Do we need to go into your history pre-Robert?" Kevin said.

"Let's not," Kitty said.

"Aren't you glad you came?" Justin asked Ryan.

Ryan watched his new siblings start bickering again, smiling. "Yeah, I am," he said.

You did a pretty good job getting the family dynamics right---it's not easy with so many players and the fairly rapid dialogue the show utilizes. I do think Ryan would be as taciturn as was humanly possible in this situation.

Nice. The Walker family dynamic seems to be fairly well captured here.
