The OC - The Pilot - Rewatching So Many Years Later...
I can remember why I loved Ryan/Marissa at first. I mean, don't get me wrong, I'm not gonna start loving them together, or Marissa at all, again, but I can remember why I liked her and loved them as a couple. When the first episode aired, even during the first 8 or so episodes (I kept Liking R/M until later, around The Truth is when I stopped entirely), we didn't know how much M was made of Suck. She scoffed at Ryan's 'Whoever you want me to be' line, which I loved her for because, face it, that was a HORRIBLE line... lol... even if it was endearing coming from Ryan...

I truly forgot how cold Kirsten was, but how she also seemed willing to admit that Ryan WAS just a kid, going to get him towels and sheets and stuff.

And Seth's babbling... god... I loved Seth at the beginning... I got annoyed with him later, but in the first episode... he actually could ahve been a good friend for Ryan if he'd stayed as he was in the first episode. He was so pathetically desperate for a friend, and he actually showed some signs of being a good friend back to Ryan in the early eps. Then he began to take Ryan for granted and that was that, Ryan become dependable, even though Ryan couldn't count on Seth in return.

And Ryan already, after knowing Seth MAYBE a few hours, was trying to help Seth get Summer by reminding him that Summer might be at the Fashion Show... I don't think Ryan was hoping to see Marissa again, I think he figured he'd be gone in a few days and that was that, but hey, maybe he could help Seth out, since the kid had been nice to him.

First time around? I wanted to hug Marissa during the scenes with the Feds coming to see Jimmy and him trying to dance around the issue with her. I felt bad for her, because she KNEW something was wrong and he was lying, but she loved her dad so much she didn't want to think he was lying.

I don't know if anyone else saw it, but I think, in the scene where Sandy ties Ryan's tie, Ryan had this kinda lost puppy look on his face as he tried to get out of wearing a tie by saying No Tie is a good look and Sandy saying eh didn't know how to tie one until he was 25, but as Ryan turned, he pasted a kind annoyed teenager look on his face, like he didn't want Sandy to know he felt lost in the suit...

Again, feeling sympathy for Marissa when Julie is bitching about her hair beign harsh on her angles and the Donna Karen dress being 'very forgiving'... Julie was such a raging bitch... I can't beleive I came to love her so much...

Ryan's little playing along with the Newpsies is so cute... and kirsten busting him with the 7&7... lol... I think she was actually kind of amused by it, even if she'd never admit it in a millions years, I think she found it amusing that he tried and that he handed it right over to her when she busted him...

Summer... oh god... she was so slutty acting... lol... again, like Julie, I never would have expected to come to love her so much...

I actually have the MP3 of the song from the fashion show 'All Around The World (Punk Debutante)'... I like the song... it's kinda fun... lol

Marissa and Summer were both such lushes in the pilot... lol... thank god Summer actually grew the fuck up pretty quickly after the pilot...

The scene with Jimmy going into the bathroom and crying... I wonder if later he even realized that his daughter was dating the kid who was in there when he went in... and the look on Ryan's face when he heard Jimmy crying... I think he realized right then that Newport may look like paradise, but it wasn't, the people there had pain, too... it was just kept hidden better...

Ryan telling Seth that Summer invited Seth to the party... god... Ryan was being a good friend there... I think Ryan is the one and only character I never stopped loving, even if I sighed and wanted to wring his neck on occasion (the constant returning to M being the main reason)... I loved how Ryan went from nervous and unsure to completely confident when he walked into the party, like this was something he knew how to do, he could party with booze and drugs, he knew this world, even if it was in a fancier house than he was used to...

Luke so majorly sucked... again, never expected to love him. Never expected to miss him so damn much...

Did the Coopers even have a dog after the first episode (few episodes)? lol... Jimmy is so pathetically still in love with Kirsten. That is so completely obvious. And Kirsten's strained expression when jimmy says "They're not doing anything we didn't do..."

Threesome in the bathroom!

Summer... god... sweety, slut looks good on no one... and Drunk!Seth is as big an idiot as he became while sober later on... the look on Ryan's face when Seth busted him as being from Chino... he was devastated that he couldn't spend just one night pretending he wasn't trash... and yet, he still saves Seth's ass when Luke and the idiots are beating him up... Seth didn't deserve the save... Luke is such a... omfg... lol... and notice how Luke needed help to kick Ryan's ass.... and LMFAO when Seth tried to help and kinda failed miserably... lol...

It's sad that Ryan is so... not at all bothered by the fight. He's used to it... but I love the little amused smile as Seth continues about Summer... It's sad, but it seems like later, Seth COMPLETELY forget Ryan saving his ass... or maybe that he remembered, but expected Ryan to do it constantly in all aspects of life...

God... i was ready to hate Summer and wish much pain on her for dumping Marissa in the driveway... so much for best friends, huh? Marissa could have choked on her own vomit or something! And Ryan's hesitance to look in her purse for her keys was so endearing...

And Ryan knew he was screwed as soon as Kirsten walked in... the dejected look on his face, like he knew he fucked up and wouldn't get to stay even one more night...

Looking back, I can see that Kirsten wasn't being a bitch about Ryan so much as jsut not 'getting' that he really IS a nice good, better than nice! She WAS so caught up in the Newport Bubble that she couldn't see how much he needed to be PART of her 'really nice family'... he needed to be loved and she just... she couldn't see it...

Seth still showed the signs of being a potential good friend with the goodbye to Ryan... and the giving Ryan the map... and I loved Ryan's joking smack across Seth's face... lol...

I think the look on Ryan's face as he and Sandy left was something like "It was nice living in a fairytale for a day..."

I think Ryan maybe half expected the house to be empty, and that's why he didn't want Sandy coming with him. He was still upset, because he'd still been hoping she was there, but... I think he half expected it. I think his quick search was more about "Did she leave anything? Anything at all? Maybe she'll be back for it and if I'm here she won't leave me?" than "No, she wouldn't leave me!"

I still love The Pilot, all these years later. Ryan is and always will be love. I expected to hate Summer, Julie, and Luke, but instead I love them. I expected to always love Seth and Sandy but I disliked them sometimes, even hated them for brief periods, and Kirsten... I didn't know what to make of her, but by the end I liked her... maybe loved her a little.

But Ryan was, is, and always will be loved by me.

I used to watch OC all the time. I like to have something on the TV while I'm working around the house but a while back I switched to having Scrubs on most of the time or maybe a Harry Potter movie. The other day I was in the basement working and couldn't get a DVD to play so I just brought up JoostTV and began watching The OC. I couldn't take my eyes off the screen, couldn't get any work done and had to smile at how much I still love the show. I went to Joost again today but had to turn it off because there was no way I was going to able to work with Ryan Atwood on the screen. Ryan and Marissa are the couple that attracted viewers to The OC in the beginning but their chemistry was destroyed as the show progressed however in those first episodes they really shined. I too always loved Ryan and always will.
