Warnings: Some Language. Anti-Theresa. Some suggestive stuff.
Summary: Ryan hated having to come to the shelters, but the Mercy Chapel shelter was better than most, and despite being in Southern California, it got cold at night, so really he didn't have a choice.
Notes: AU, Ryan never called Sandy for a pick up because Theresa's mom agreed to let him stay at their house. Ryan is 16, Lily is about 8 months old, Theresa is a bitch. Other stuff is seriously AU, but that will be explained int he story itself.

This is also a response to one of my 'Image Prompts' that I created for myself using stock images, so the prompt image is under the cut.

Ryan hated having to come to the shelters, but the Mercy Chapel shelter was better than most, and despite being in Southern California, it got cold at night, so really he didn't have a choice. Thankfully, the staff at Mercy Chapel knew him from his regular meals there, and they found a bed for him immediately, apologizing that they didn't have a free crib for Lily. "Don't worry about it," he assured them, shifting his girl on his hip. "I'd rather keep her close, anyway."

As he sat on the cot, Lily sitting in his lap holding her bottle while he flipped through a magazine, Emily Cutter, a nurse who volunteered at the shelter, came over. "Hey, Em," Ryan greeted.

"How are you guys?" Emily replied, brushing a hand over Lilky's soft blonde hair.

"We're holding our own," Ryan said. "I got a car, but... it's a little too cold to sleep in it, you know?"

"Yeah," Emily agreed. "Listen, how would you like a couple weeks work that comes along with a bed in one of the rooms here and a promise of an apartment rent free for six months?" she said.

"What?"

"We're starting a pilot program to help those who are willing to actually work get on their feet," Emily said. "We got a grant, and bought a sort of run down apartment building. It's structurally sound, but we need people to help us with painting and little repairs, and anyone who does that, gets a promise of a bed and meals hear, and then gets one of the apartments for their own, six months rent free."

"Seriously?" Ryan said, looking down at Lily, who's head was tilted up to look at him with wide, curious, eyes.

"What do you think? After those six months, you'd have the option of continuing to live there, but paying a small rent," Emily said. "The whole idea is to give people a chance to ahve a real address and phone number so they can apply for jobs, and we can set up a daycare center to help the families."

Ryan nodded slwoly, hunching over to kiss Lily's forehead. "Yeah, Em, I'd like that."

~~~
The building was more than slightly run down, and there was a lot to work to do, but he liked this kind of work better than what he had been doing. It scared him everytime he left Lily locked in the car to go into an alley with a 'customer', but he didn't have anyone to leave her with so he could 'work', and at least this way he was no more than 15 feet away from her. But this new 'job' came with space for Lily to play and sleep, supervised by shelter volunteers, while he worked.
At the end of the first day, Ryan headed down the stairs as fast as he could to check on Lily, frowning when he didn't see her in the playpen since it was her usual naptime. "Em?" he called.
"She was a little fussy, so one of our Volunteers is trying to calm her down," Emily said, pointing into the other room, where a well dressed woman was walking in slow circles, holding Lily and talking to her. The baby was still fussing, though, and Ryan hurried in. "I'll take her," he said, scopping his daughter out fo the woman's arms and smiling at her. "Hey, baby girl, you giving them trouble while I work?" he asked.
"I think she's runing a fever," the woman who'd been holding her sad, frowning.
Ryan shifted his hold on Lily and touched the back of his hand to her forehead before swearing under his breath. "You not feeling well, baby?" he asked her, rubbing her back. He headed back intot he main room. "Em? She's got a fever..."
"Let's see about that," Emily said, grabbing the little first aid kit and pulling out the digital thermometer. She carefully put the end into Lily's ear whilke Ryan tried to sooth the baby. "I'm sure it's nothing, Ryan, baby's get fevers, you know that."
"If she's sick, there's room for us on the transport van, right? Because I'l have to sell the car..."
"You know you qualify for the medical program, Ryan," Emily said, trying to reassure him as she looked at the temperature. "It's a little high, but nothign to worry about," she said. "Relax, Ryan, she's okay."
"I can't lose her," Ryan said, shifting his hold again so that her head was against his shoulder. "She's all I've got, Em."
"I know, honey, but she's okay," Emily assured him. "Dr. Julian's going to be at the shelter tomorrow morning, if the fever hasn't gone down, we'll get her to check on Lily, okay?"
"What about working here?" Ryan said.
"It's not going to affect you getting one of the apartments," Emily promised.
"Okay," Ryan said, pressing his cheek against the top of Lily's head. "Unless I need to stay..."
"Go ahead back and get a good bed. If you go now you might be able to get into one of the side rooms and get a crib, too," Emily said, lightly running her hand over Ryan's hair as he left, pausing only to grab his jacket and the bag of Lily's stuff.
"Is he the one you told me about?" the well dressed woman said.
"Yeah," Emily replied. "He doesn't give us his last name, but he's referred to his mother as 'Dawn', and he's got a brother named 'Trey', which fits with what you told us."
The woman watched out the window as Ryan got Lily settled into a car seat, chewing her lip. "I can't believe I found him."
"So, now what, Mrs. Bullitt?"
Julie Cooper-Bullit sighed, shaking her head. "I don't know."
To Be Continued...
Bet you guys were expecting the 'well dressed woman' to be Kirsten, huh? lol
Maramissmara on May 4th, 2009 10:30 pm (UTC)
There will be more very soon, no worries! Part two needs a little more written and some tweaking, but... yeah... more soon.
Oh this is too cool- didn't see Julie coming at all, great surprise :D
I'm keeping fingers crossed that you continue this one. It seems like it has a lot of potential!
Maramissmara on May 4th, 2009 10:32 pm (UTC)
There will be more, don't worry. When I first wrote it, weeks ago, I didn't intend for it to be Julie, but then suddenly it was and I had one of those "OMFG that's it!" moments and wrote with it being Julie and loved it... lol
You're right, I didn't see it. And now I want to know what the connection is to Julie.
Maramissmara on May 4th, 2009 10:33 pm (UTC)
I wouldn't neccesarily say the connection is to Julie so much as to someone she's connected to... Like links in a chain or something... lol...
hmmmmmm
I'm really curious, why Julie would look for Ryan.
And I'm glad, he found a real job now, not the kind of "job" he was doing before.
Maramissmara on May 4th, 2009 10:35 pm (UTC)
Trust me, Ryan's glad he has a real job now, too... lol... but he was doing what it took to take care of his girl, and there wasn't any other way to makie the money he needed in order to do that, not without having to leave her with people he didn't trust (like Theresa)... but trust me, things are looking up for him soon...
Great beginning. I love how we jump into Ryan's life already so badly broken. You're right, I was expecting Kirsten. But since Julie is a twist, it's got me even more hooked!
I've missed your writing, so I was pleased to see this. It's definitely an intriguing start. Despite the differences, Ryan's so very much in character with shouldering the weight of the world and focusing totally on the person in his care.
I'll be very curious to see what's at work here- and where you're going. Julie? Who would have guessed?
Awesome start..
I can't wait to see how this plays
out.
Whoa!You've got a nice Julie, in this story?I like it.Will there be a part two?
KLlving_darkness on August 16th, 2009 04:04 am (UTC)
What a twist! Though, hopefully the Bullitt has mellowed Julie out a bit.
Is there gonna be more?
Re: You are so mean!
I do actually have a bit more written, but I sort of went into a writing slump for a while... I'll see about polishing up the chapter two I wrote so I can post it...
This is a really interesting idea. I'm looking forward to finding out why Julie is looking for him and what else happens next. Is there any other parts of this up ?
(Anonymous) on July 20th, 2012 09:38 am (UTC)
Hi, not sure you are even reading this anymore and I know you don´t answer questions about updates- which this is not I promise- but I was just wondering if there is a second part to this? I can´t find it so if there is would you mind pointing me in the right direction?
Maramissmara on July 20th, 2012 05:31 pm (UTC)
I'd had several additional chapters written when my previous laptop up and died on me spring 2011 and I lost all of it, along with a bunch of other stuff. Someday I may come back to this, but I've been having trouble writing anything recently, so I have no idea when that might be.
