Feel This - Part Three
Okay... so... yeah. I hesitated on this one, which is why it took so long. I had two ways it could go, and this is the way I decided on.

Feel This - Part Three

"You're an idiot," Neil said when Sandy walked out of Ryan's room to get some coffee.

"Neil..." Sandy began.

"The one time that lying to social services would have been a good idea, and you told the truth," Neil said.

"No, Sandy, you look," Neil said firmly. "You admitted to just sitting there while your biological child hit your foster child. And then you didn't respond when she asked you if you would have moved quicker if it was Ryan going after Seth. You might as well have told her that you didn't care of Ryan got hit, as long as Seth didn't."

"You weren't..."

"Are you trying to throw away one of your kids, Sandy? Because I think that's what you did tonight," Neil said. "And where the hell is Kirsten?"

"She's at Suriak, you know that," Sandy said.

"Even with one of her kids in the hospital?" Neil asked. "Or have you not bothered to tell her?"

"She needs..."

"If it was Seth in that room, would you have called her?" Neil asked. He let out a soft snort when Sandy looked away instead of answering. "That's what I thought," he said. "You have two sons, Sandy. Or at least you did. You may have just tossed one aside because of your own stupidity."

"Daddy?" Summer asked when Neil walked into the house late that night, hours after his shift should have ended.

"He'll be okay," Neil said. "He's got a nice white cast, and he should be released sometime tomorrow..."

Neil sighed and sat down beside his daughter on the stairs. "He probably won't be going back to the Cohens," he explained. "Apparently, Sandy was sitting at the table when the argument happened, and he just sat there as Ryan tried to walk away, and Seth followed him and punched him. And then he admitted that to Ryan's social worker."

"Idiot," Summer muttered.

"Pretty much what I said," Neil agreed. "I don't know what's going to happen now."

"But you think they're gonna move him," Summer said.

"This sucks," Summer said.

"Pretty much," Neil said. "Come on, we both need some sleep, and in the morning we'll go check on him, okay?"

"Okay," Summer agreed.

Ryan didn't sleep. He rolled onto his side, cast encased arm cradled to his chest, and pretended to sleep when Sandy came in and quietly asked if he was awake, but he didn't actually sleep. Instead he lay there and listened as nurse's came in and out to check on him and Sandy periodically asked if he was awake, and Ms. Mitchell came to kick Sandy out, telling him that Ryan was being removed from their care, the word coming out like it was such a bitter lie she could barely say it. Not that Ryan was really inclined to argue, despite his desire to just go home to the pool house.

When the morning came, Ryan let a nurse 'wake him up', for breakfast, and after he ate Ms. Mitchell came back in, looking frazzled. "Did you find me a placement?" he asked as soon as the door closed.

"Ryan..." the woman began.

"I didn't sleep last night," Ryan said. "I know I'm not going back to the Cohens. So, did you find me a placement? Or am I stuck here another night? Or are you gonna shove me in juvie until you find me a placement? Isn't that how it usually works?"

"You're 17, you've kept up your grades, improved on them even, despite all of the drama you've experienced the last few years. There's a letter your former PO forwarded to us to put in your file, from your boss at the 'Crab Shack'. It says you're a hard worker, and he was sorry to see you go when school started."

"Do you think you could handle work and school?" Ms. Mitchell asked.

"I did in Chino."

"Then I think you might want to consider becoming an emancipated minor. As long as you can prove that you can support yourself, I think a judge will approve it."

"I can't wait tables with a broken arm," Ryan said. "And I have some savings, but not enough..."

"We can see if we can work with that. If you're willing to try."

Ryan didn't respond immediately, just sighed and looked out the window into the hall, where Summer and Neil were talking. Summer spotted him looking their way and smiled, a sad, heartbreaking, smile, but it was reassuring all the same. "Yeah, I'll try," Ryan agreed, looking back at Ms. Mitchell.

"I'll get the ball rolling," she said. "In the meantime, is there anyone you can stay with, just until we get this worked out? I'd rather not put you in some random home while this is being worked on."

"I don't know," Ryan said.

"Okay," Ms. Mitchell said, getting up from her seat. "Well, we'll think of something."

"Thanks," Ryan said.

"I'll be back in a few hours to tell you what's going on, okay?"

"Yeah, thanks," Ryan repeated.

She stopped in the hall to talk to Neil, and Summer slipped into the room, going to Ryan's side and leaning down to give him a hug. "Hey," she whispered, her face pressed into the hollow where his neck met his shoulder.

"Hey," Ryan echoed, his uninjured hand coming up to cradle the back of Summer's head. "I'm okay," he whispered.

"Uh-huh, sure, right, totally believe you," Summer said as she pulled back, sitting on the edge of the bed and taking his uninjured hand in hers. "Now how about the truth?"

"My arm hurts," Ryan said. "And Ms. Mitchell was talking about getting me emancipated, but I have nowhere near enough money to live on until my arm is better and I can work..."

"My bank account is more than willing to donate to yours," Summer said.

"No, Chino, I mean it. I'm a spoiled little rich girl, I can live with a couple thousand less in my account if it means you're okay and can focus on healing and school instead of work."

"She's right about that," Neil said as he came in, closing the door behind him. "Ryan, as I just told Ms. Mitchell, if you need some more money to hold you over, I'm willing to loan it to you. I won't even charge interest," he added with a smile.

"Daddy!" Summer scolded for the bad attempt at a joke, but she couldn't be too annoyed because he was trying to help.

"I'd pay you back as soon as I could work," Ryan said.

"That's the deal," Neil agreed. "Once you've found an apartment, we'll sit down and go over your expenses, figure out how much you'll need a month, and how much you need to borrow."

"Thanks," Ryan said.

"And, as long as you two promise me that you'll behave, you can stay at our place until everything is sorted out and you find a place of your own," Neil said. "And by behave, I mean no..."

"Nothing R rated?" Summer said.

"Nothing above PG," Neil countered, trying not to smile as Summer made a face, but nodded.

"Fine," she said.

"I can live with that," Ryan said. "Thanks."

"My daughter has faith in you, and Dr. Kim actually likes you, which is pretty much impossible, so..." Neil said.

"Did you know dad went to high school with Dr. Kim?" Summer asked. "She was apparently the Taylor Townsend of their class."

"Scary," Ryan said.

To Be Continued...

With that out of the way... lol...

I want to clarify. Sanddy didn't intentionally let Ryan get hurt. He just didn't think it was possible for Seth to hurt Ryan. And unfortunately, he doesn't understand that it IS impossible for Ryan to hurt Seth because Ryan just isn't capable of going after someone weaker than himself. He's not wired that way.

Neil remains awesome, though, so there's a plus.

I really loved Neil spelling it out for Sandy how much his stupidity cost the Cohens. I'm interested to see what Kristen's reaction will be- I can't imagine she's going to be happy that Sandy lost Ryan while she was getting clean.

Neil continues to remain awesome and I'm glad to see Summer's being proactive.
