Beautiful World - Part Three

Beautiful World - Part Three

"Where did you disappear to last night?" Blair asked as she found Chuck in the bar, going over the profits from the party.

"I was catching up with an old friend," Chuck replied.

"What old friend?" Blair asked, suspicious.

"Are you jealous?" Chuck asked. "I thought you knew that I was utterly devoted to you."

"Not as devoted as you are to your libido," Blair replied.

"There was no sex for me last night, Blair," Chuck replied. "Although there would have been if you'd come by."

"I was busy," Blair replied.

"Doing what?"

"Scheming," Blair said. "Stop changing the subject."

"What was the subject?" Chuck evaded.

"What old friend?"

"No one you know," Chuck said as his phone rang. He pulled it out, smiling slightly as he answered. "I was wondering if you'd actually call," he said.

"How can I resist your charms, Chuck?" Ryan replied sarcastically. "When's a good time for you?"

"I'm free now," Chuck said, turning from an outraged Blair.

"Where do you wanna meet?"

"I'll meet you at the front desk of the hotel."

"Alright, I'll be there in about twenty minutes, I'm just leaving Lily and Rufus' after breakfast. They're big on this whole 'family' thing."

"The stories I can tell you about that," Chuck replied.

"See you soon," Ryan said before ending the call.

"I have a meeting in twenty minutes, but until then I'm yours," Chuck said, as he turend back to Blair.

"A meeting? With your old friend?" Blair said.

"Yes, as a matter of fact."

"Cute blonde?" Blair asked.

"I wouldn't use the word cute, but..." Chuck said. "I suppose some would describe him that way."

"Him?" Blair asked.

"Him," Chuck said. "His grandfather was friends with my father," he elaborated, simplyfing thigns at the same time. "I haven't seen him in well over two years, that's a lot of catching up to do."

"Oh," Blair said. "Well, I'll just see you tonight," she concluded, kissing his cheek before walking out so she could stake out a spot to spy on Chuck and his friend.

Chuck was lounging in a chair when he saw Ryan walk in, and he got to his feet. "Ryan," he called in greeting, walking over to the other man. "Let's go to my office," he said as they headed for the elevator. It took a moment for it to arrive, and when it did, Chuck absently placed his hand on Ryan's lower back to usher him inside, not realizing that he had an audience in the form of Blair.

"Where, exactly, is your office, Chuck?" Ryan asked once the doors closed behind them, leaving them in the empty elevator.

"Upstairs," Chuck replied, moving around to stand facing Ryan, one hand on the other man's hip while his other hand reached up to cup Ryan's neck. "I always think best in private."

"In other words, you think best when there's a bed within easy reach," Ryan replied with a laugh.

"Well, yes," Chuck said. "But we're going up to talk, because you refuse to be 'that guy', even though I keep telling you, Blair wouldn't care."

"So does she know you're meeting with an ex-lover right now?" Ryan countered.

"She knows I'm catching up with an old friend," Chuck replied. "Aren't I?"

"Yeah, Chuck, you are," Ryan said, glancing up as the elevator dinged and the doors opened.

"This way," Chuck said, leading the way. He unlocked the door and held it for Ryan, who couldn't resist.

"Suddenly you're a gentleman?" Ryan asked.

"Only for those who deserve it," Chuck replied. "Something to drink?"

"Yeah, sure Chuck, I'm gonna let you get me drunk," Ryan replied moving to take a seat in a chair, slumped down.

"What happened after I left?" Chuck asked, seating himself on the couch.

"I got back together with Marissa," Ryan said. "I know, stupid of me. You really don't have to say it."

"She's not worthy of you," Chuck said.

"Anyway, there was... drama, like always. We broke up again, and then we got back together... We both got into Berkeley, but she decided to spent a year with her dad, sailing the world... I drove her to the airport, and when I was on my home, this guy... during that last break up, she'd dated this guy, Volchak. He's a junkie, probably a dealer, too... anyway, he got pissed when she dumped him to get back together with me, and... when I was on my way home form dropping her off, he showed up and started ramming my truck with his van. He ran me off the road, and there was this embankment... I almost died, but I managed to pull myself out before the truck caught on fire, and ... and a while later someone drove by and saw me laying there, so they called an ambulance."

"How close was it?" Chuck asked, leaning forward and reaching out to touch Ryan's leg, reassuring himself that his former lover was there and alright.

"Three fractured vertebrae," Ryan said. "I was... I couldn't feel my legs for awhile. But I had a couple surgeries..."

"A couple?"

"Three," Ryan admitted. "Kirsten pretty much never left the hospital until they released me, and Sandy gave up his home office so I could have a bedroom that didn't require climbing steps. I got better."

"But you knew you weren't an Atwood," Chuck said.

"What kind of person goes into their son's hospital room when he's just had emergency surgery and still can't feel his legs, and tells him that he's worthless and she enver should ahve wasted her time and energy on adopting him?"

"A bitch?" Chuck said. "You deserve better. You have better, both in the Cohens and in Lily and Rufus."

"Summer, you remember her, right? Seth's girlfriend?"

"With the rage black outs?" Chuck said. "I rather liked her."

"You would," Ryan said. "She called Marissa as soon as she found out I was hurt, and... and Marissa couldn't be bothered to call me, or even email me. A year later, right before I made the decision to come out here and meet Lily and Rufus, she suddenly showed up and expected everything to be like it was. I was suppose to just... hold her and tell her I loved her always and act like she didn't hurt me."

"What did you say?"

"I called her a selfish bitch and told her to go to hell."

Chuck smiled widely, laughing. "You finally grew a pair when it comes to her."

"Yeah, well..." Ryan said. "I wish you'd been there to tell her off, because I'm sure you would have done a better job than me."

"I wish you'd called me after the accident," Chuck said. "I would have come."

"Chuck... I was out of it for a while. And you are not high on Sandy and Kirsten's list of supportive people."

"They would have had me thrown out of the hospital," Chuck agreed. "You never liked me."

"The first time they met you, you were shoving your hand up Holly Fisher's skirt," Ryan said, laughing.

"And the second time I had my hand down your pants," Chuck replied with a smirk.

Ryan nodded. "I... uh... I heard about your dad."

"Yes, that was..."

"I would have come," Ryan said. "But I had just had the third surgery when it happened, and by the time I found out... I let people convince me I'd just cause more problems for you."

"You could never cause me problems," Chuck said firmly.

"Even if Blair found out?" Ryan countered.

"She and I weren't even close to an item when you and I were together, and we were hardly exclusive when my father died. It wasn't until months later that we became... somewhat exclusive."

"Somewhat?" Ryan said.

"We don't follow the dating rules."

"Why am I not surprised that you break the rules?" Ryan said, laughing again.

"I wish you could have been here," Chuck said. "It would have helped."

"I'm sorry I wasn't," Ryan said, leaning forward to covering Chuck's hand with his own. "How are you holding up?"

"Much better now than I was," Chuck said.

For the moment, the two sat in silence, then Chuck glanced towards the bedroom of the suite. "For old time's sake?" he said.

Ryan rolled his eyes. "You don't change, Bass."

"I thought you liked that about me?"

"Very much," Ryan replied.

Chuck took that as a cue and got up to go to Ryan, leaning over him for a kiss and threading his fingers through the blonde's hair. "You know how I feel about you," he said.

"Chuck..." Ryan said, sighing softly.

"If I thought it was a possibility, I'd chose you without hesitation," Chuck continued.

"Don't," Ryan said warningly. "You know how I feel about being..."

"You are the one person I can't lie to," Chuck interrupted, kissing Ryan again. "You can see right through me."

"Chuck, it... it would never work out. Not in the long run, not even in the short term, and you know it."

"So we can't enjoy how we feel?" Chuck countered.

"Not when you're in an exclusive relationship."

"Exclusive is subjective," Chuck argued.

"Would Blair agree with that?" Ryan countered.

Chuck sighed, moving to press his lips against Ryan's ear. "At the moment, I couldn't care less what she would or would not agree with," he said. 'She lied and manipulated me into kissing some random man so she could get an honor that someone else was far more deserving of."

"And you'd never manipulate someone?" Ryan asked.

"Not someone I cared about," Chuck said. "Not you."

Chuck smiled as he recognized Ryan's resolve was wavering. "Come into the bedroom," he asked.

"I'm not that easy, Bass," Ryan said, chuckling, as he pushed the other man away.

"I want to look at your back," Chuck said.

"I want to see how bad the scars are."

"Why?" Ryan repeated. "What's it matter?"

"It matters to me," Chuck said.

"You just think that if you can get me in bed without a shirt, the pants will come off next," Ryan argued, even as he got up, heading towards the bedroom.

"It was a thought," Chuck agreed.

Ryan started to pull his t-shirt up, but flinched part way, then froze as Chuck's hands covered his own, gently pulling the fabric from his hands and easing it up over Ryan's head, then down his arms. "Thanks," Ryan said.

"Does it still hurt?"

"Sometimes," Ryan said. "When I move my arms too high, or if I sit hunched over for too long... or sit up straight for too long... or stand for too long."

"So... always?" Chuck asked.

"Pretty much," Ryan admitted.

"Lay down," Chuck instructed, urging Ryan towards the bed. He wanted until his former lover had laid down on his stomach, then climbed up beside him, sitting beside Ryan to run his fingers over the scars. "Does this hurt?" he asked.

"No," Ryan said, turning his head to look at Chuck. "I'm still not gonna sleep with you, though."

"You can only resist me for so long," Chuck said with a smirk. He stretched out beside Ryan, one hand remaining on the other man's back, slowly stroking the skin, enjoying the feel of the skin beneath his fingers. "I've missed you," he said.

"Believe it or not, I missed you, too," Ryan replied.

Chuck stretched over to kiss Ryan again, soft and gentle.

"Get out here, Chuck!"

Ryan jumped at the sudden yell, the muscles of his back immediately tensing, accompanied by a pain sound slipping past his lips. Chuck got to his feet, completely furious, and stormed out of the room to find Blair standing in the main room, hands on her hips. "What?" he said.

"What, you thought because I made you kiss a man you'd go find some guy to have sex with?" Blair demanded. "I thought you forgave me!"

"Not everything is about you, Blair," Chuck replied. "And he's an old friend."

"Is he the man you'd kissed before?" Blair asked.

"As a matter of fact, yes," Chuck said. "But more than that, he is my friend."

"And do you invite all your friends into your bedroom?"

"The ones who mean something to me I do," Chuck said. "Feel free to be jealous, just do it somewhere else."

"I want him out of here!" Blair demanded.

"You can't always get what you want, Blair," Chuck replied. "Leave before I have you escorted out."

"You wouldn't."

"You want to find out?" Chuck said.

"I need to go anyway, Chuck," Ryan said as he walked out of the bedroom, his shirt back on. "I've got plans for the afternoon."

"Don't leave because of her," Chuck said.

"I'm not," Ryan promised. "You've got my number, too, Chuck. You can call me as easily as I can call you," he said as he left the room.

"Okay, seriously, why are you and Eric at each other’s throats?" Ryan asked as he helped set up for the Van Der Woodsen-Humphrey Board Game Championship, as Rufus had declared the night.

"I may have dumped a cup of yogurt over his head?" Jenny said. "And had his boyfriend egged."

"You what?" Ryan asked.

"Well... they sat higher than me!"

"What?" Ryan repeated.

"No one is allowed to sit higher than the Queen Bee, and I am the Queen Bee, so... if I let them get away with it, I would have lost my power with the Mean Girls, and..."

"And having that power is worth alienating part of your family?"

"He knew better!"

Ryan sighed. "Jenny..."

"I thought you said you wouldn't take sides!" Jenny protested.

"I'm not," Ryan replied. "I'm just wondering how you could think power is more important than your family? What if it was Dan you had to humiliate in order to stay in power. Would you?"

"Dan's dating Olivia, so no, humiliating him would cost me my power."

"Wow, way to miss the point," Ryan said.

"What is that suppose to mean?"

"It means, Eric is your brother. And you humiliated him for the sake of girls that you yourself just called 'Mean Girls'. Is that really who you want to be?"

"I don't wanna be miss nobody from Brooklyn," Jenny said.

"Jen... In Newport, I am and always will be that car thief from Chino," Ryan said. "Nothing is ever going to make people forget that. But you know what i figured out? I don't care. There's more to life than fitting in with the pompous idiots who think they're better than everyone else."

"The son of Lily Van Der Woodsen is saying that?" Jenny said.

"The guy who tried to fit in with the rich kids and never managed is saying it," Ryan said. "Whatever, be the Queen Bitch if that makes you happy. You're my sister, I'm gonna love you anyway, but... don't expect me to defend your actions."

"Come on guys! Everyone's here!" Rufus called from the living room.

"Ryan, this is my girlfriend, Olivia Burke," Dan introduced.

"Nice to meet you," Ryan said, shaking her hand before taking a seat on the floor. "What's the first game?"

"Scrabble," Rufus declared.

"In which Dan uses words no one else thinks are real," Eric added.

"Oh, I've got a couple words like that," Ryan said.

"Are you in school somewhere?" Olivia asked Ryan while the scrabble tiles were set up.

"I'm taking some time off," Ryan said. "But I'm an architecture student at UCLA."

"Architecture? That's really cool," Olivia said.

"Eh, if you don't mind dealing with Physics geeks who call you lame for wanting to be an architect," Ryan replied. "Aparently, if you're taking Physics for any reason except to become a phsycist? There's something wrong with you."

"I know a couple people like that," Olivia said. "But those people tend to be the ones who burn out."

"Two of my physics classmates had practically has mental breakdowns by the end of the first semester," Ryan agreed. "Of course one of our professors is a little psychotic, so that could be why. The guy has half the class convinced he's going to kill us all with his pinky in our sleep."

"Sorry I'm late, Blair had a horrible day so I invited her to join us," Serena said as she walked in.

"You!" Blair yelled when she saw Ryan.

"Crap," Ryan replied.

You know, as much as I love Chuck/Ryan I think it'd be hilarious if Blair and Ryan teamed up to make his life miserable for a while (maybe after a slap fight to clear the air?).

LOVED this chapter, especially the alternate history of the car crash and Marissa. AWESOME.

Thanks so much for sharing!
