Beautiful World - Part Five

"Is your back alright?" Chuck asked later, running his fingertips over the skin, paying particular attention to the scars.

"A little sore, but it's not as bad as it has been," Ryan replied. "I've got my painkillers in my jacket," he added.

"I'll get them," Check said, leaning over to press a light kiss to the spot between Ryan's shoulder blades before getting up to cross the room in the nude. He pulled the bottle out of the pocket, along with Ryan's phone. "You're phone says you have a lot of missed calls," he said, handing it over as he turned his attention to the bottle, looking over the instructions.

Ryan sighed and flipped through the list of messages, seeing that there was seven from Seth, two from Kirsten, four from Sandy, and one from Summer. He deleted the Cohens' messages without listening, and skipped over Summer's, but decided to listen to the last message from Lily.

Ryan, Rufus and I would feel better if you saw a doctor here in New York, just to make sure you're alright. I have the numbers for three doctors who specialize in back injuries, but I won't make any appointments until we talk to you. Just think about it, please.

"Lily wants to make me a doctor's appointment in the city," Ryan reported.

"Not a bad idea," Chuck said, setting a glass of water down on the bedside table along with two of the painkillers. "This is a very strong medication, Ryan."

"That's why I don't like taking them," Ryan replied. "They make my head fuzzy, and it's hard to think, and that's how I get convinced I shouldn't even call you when your dad's died."

"You can stay and sleep off the fuzziness," Chuck said, climbing back into bed and returning his hand to Ryan's back. "Like I said, I've cancelled my plans for today."

"You don't have to baby-sit me, Chuck," Ryan said, looking over at him.

"I wouldn't want to be anywhere else," Chuck replied. "I do need to go out for a bit later, to tell Blair it's over. But the rest of the day, I'm yours."

"Chuck Bass belongs to no one," Ryan said. "And who says I want you and your ugly scarves?" he added.

"I don't wear the scarves anymore," Chuck replied, smiling. "And when I did, it's because they were my signature."

"They were hideous and tacky," Ryan replied, laughing.

"And yet..."

"Shut up," Ryan said, reaching out a hand to lightly grip Chuck's arm. "I missed you," he added. "A lot more than I expected to."

"I knew exactly how much I would miss you," Chuck replied. "The big question is, how are the Cohens going to react when they discover we're an item again?"

"They're gonna freak," Ryan admitted. "But I... I don't really care. Lily, and Rufus, and the siblings, they're... I wouldn't say 'okay' with it, but they know we were something. They know I think you're a human being underneath the asshole."

"You really are trying to ruin my reputation, aren't you?" Chuck asked, placing a kiss on the back of Ryan's neck. "Lily is a good woman," he said after a moment. "And a wonderful mother. You're very lucky to have her."

"What do I not know?" Ryan asked, looking up.

"When my father died, my uncle Jack came to the city to take guardianship of me. He set out to make me look like a liability to the company, and to control my life. Lily stepped up and offered to go through with paperwork she and my father had started before his death. He'd been going to adopted Serena and Eric, and she was going to adopt me. I had treated her very poorly following my father's death, but she went through with the adoption so she could protect me from Jack. And he went after her in retaliation. He attacked her."

"What?" Ryan asked.

"She was fine," Chuck said quickly. "Security and I managed to arrive in time. Later, I went to check on her, and she told me that she was in charge of Bass Industries until I turned eighteen, at which time she intended to sign the company over to me, all of it. She said she didn't want the company, or the corporate jet, or anything, except for me to be part of her family. And then she allowed me to move back in with her, Serena, and Eric for a while. She never held my behavior following his death against me."

"Sounds like you were pretty lucky to have her, too," Ryan said.

"Well somehow I think some of those good feelings will wane when she discovers I've caught her oldest child in my web," Chuck said.

Ryan chuckled again, resting his forehead against Chuck's forearm. "I don't care. I'm tired of letting everyone else decide what's best for me."

"I may tell you what I think, but I won't try to decide for you," Chuck promised. "I promise you."

"You should go talk to Blair so I can stop feeling like I'm 'the other man'."

"You're not," Chuck insisted as he got up, reaching for his clothes. "You're a home wrecker," he added, smiling again when Ryan laughed. "I'll be back soon. Just rest, get some sleep. Watch TV and order room service. Let me spoil you for one day before you get annoyed with me for it."

Ryan laughed again and rolled over onto his back. "One day," he agreed.

Chuck finished getting dressed, then return to the bedside, bending down to kiss Ryan. "I'll be back soon," he repeated. "And I expect to find you resting in bed when I do so," he added as he headed out of the room.

"Is it acceptable to sit in the other room to eat?" Ryan replied.

"Eat in bed," Chuck tossed back over his shoulder, though it was with a laugh.

Ryan chuckled, waiting until the door closed before rolling on his side to grab the pill bottle from the table and shake out two additional pills, downing them with a gulp of water before shifting on to his stomach, wincing as it pulled on muscles, and settled in, hoping to sleep off the additional pills before Chuck returned.

Chuck called Blair from the elevator, telling her simply to meet him in the bar, he had something to tell her. He could almost hear the wheels turning in her heard, and could just imagine what she was thinking. Somehow, he suspected one of those thoughts involved a threesome because he had no doubt that Blair found Ryan as attractive as he did, and the thought was tempting to Chuck, imagining the two people who had ever managed to actually make him care, at the same time...

But no. He wasn't going to go that route because the truth was, Ryan meant more to him than some tawdry little threesome. And Chuck didn't even know how the hell that had happened. He'd gone after Ryan because he had been furious that the Cohens had dared to give him a disgusted look after he was caught by half of Newport with his hand up that slutty blonde's skirt. Had had wanted them to be embarrassed, and while Seth would have been the easier prey in other circumstances, Ryan was more vulnerable at the time. He hadn't planned on developing actually feelings for Ryan, of feeling just as satisfied with sitting beside Ryan and talking as he was when their hands and lips skimmed over each other's skin.

He was pulled out of his thoughts by Blair's voice as she slid onto the stool beside him, every hair in place and her clothes perfection as always. "Blair," Chuck replied.

"You wanted to talk?" Blair said, flashing her most innocent and sweet smile at him.

"I'm sorry, Blair," Chuck said. "It's over."

"Don't worry, I knew yesterday was just a momentary dalliance," Blair began.

"No, Blair," Chuck said. "Us. We're over."

"What?" Blair asked, incredulous. "What?"

"You and I are over," Chuck repeated. "Finished."

"Very funny, Chuck," Blair said, her innocent expression evaporating into an angry one.

"I'm completely serious," Chuck said. "You're little tantrum yesterday just cemented it."

"Love is not manipulation, Blair," Chuck said. "It's not lies, or tricks, or games."

"For us it is!" Blair protested.

"But not for Ryan and I. And I think I prefer he and I's brand of love."

"You're not gay!" Blair said.

"I'm attracted to the human being, not the genitalia," Chuck said, knowing his version wasn't as eloquent as Ryan's but liking it nonetheless, especially when Blair's jaw dropped open in shock, giving him time to slip away. Ryan was waiting, and he really hated to keep the other man waiting. When he got back upstairs, he was mildly disappointed to find his lover asleep again, but he simply gathered some paperwork he'd set aside when Ryan called that morning, and stretched out on the bed to go over contracts and business offers, every so often reaching over to stroke Ryan's hair and flutter his fingertips across skin.

After a few hours, Ryan had lifted his head, offering Chuck a slight smile. "So?"

"You're no longer the 'Other Man', but the 'Only One'," Chuck replied. “And you know how difficult monogamy is for me, so you should appreciate it," he added.

"How'd she take it?"

"With protests and denials," Chuck said. "But I walked out to come back up here. Only to find you asleep."

"Sorry," Ryan said. "I told you, the painkillers knock me for a loop. It's why I don't like taking them."

"Well, while I do enjoy your intellect, I think reducing the pain is more important."

"And the fact that it makes me easy has nothing to do with that preference," Ryan said doubtfully.

"Surprisingly, it doesn't," Chuck said. "I prefer my lovers to be at least somewhat lucid." he brushed his hand through Ryan's hair again. "Sleep, I can go over paperwork right here. And when you wake up, you should be able to take more if you need them."

"I need to call Lily about the doctors..." Ryan said.

"Later," Chuck said. "Rest."

"What happened to not telling me what to do?" Ryan asked, amused.

"Do you really want to get up?"

"Not really," Ryan admitted.

"Then stop complaining," Chuck said.

Ryan chuckled, then sighed softly, laying his head back down. "You're ruining your own rep, Chuck," he said. "Since when is Chuck Bass caring and compassionate?"

"Since he discovered a few people who seemed to make caring seem not so bad," Chuck replied. "You're not the only decent human being I've listened to," he added after a moment, smirk firmly in place.

"Wow, I have to meet this other miracle worker," Ryan quipped.

"Well, she's best friends with one of your newfound brothers, so I'm sure you will," Chuck said. "Vanessa Abrams is a do-gooder. Although I did somewhat corrupt her into being a manipulative schemer when the situation calls for it."

"You're good at the whole 'corrupting the good' thing," Ryan agreed.

"You were never a saint," Chuck replied, smirking. "Just a monk," he added.

"Don't start," Ryan said warningly. "I know how pathetic it is that she put out for everyone but me."

"Her loss," Chuck said firmly. "That whore wasn't good enough for you."

"Chuck..." Ryan began. "You do realize that sooner or later, word's gonna get out."

"Word of what?" Chuck replied, half his attention back on the paper work.

"That you dumped your upper east side goddess girlfriend for a former car thief street kid from Chino, California?"

"I ended a turbulent relationship with a debutante who refuses to outgrow high school politics, to reunite with an intelligent, articulate, and kind, Architecture student who overcame adversity to be excepted to several prestigious colleges."

Ryan frowned, lifting his head again. "How'd you know about that?"

"I know you're not fool enough to have only applied to one school, and I'm sure you were accepted at every school you applied to."

"I was wait listed at Harvard and Duke said no thanks," Ryan corrected, laughing slightly.

"Those schools aren't prestigious," Chuck said, sneering slightly.

"You are such an ass," Ryan said, laughing again.

"And this is a surprise?"

"No," Ryan admitted. "But I'm serious, Chuck. You have to realize that this could affect your business."

"I know," Chuck said. "But it could very well affect it positively."

"Really?" Ryan asked. "Do tell?"

"Anyone who backs out of a deal with me, will have to worry about being labeled homophobic," Chuck said. "And nowadays, that can destroy a reputation, and a company, quicker than an affair."

"So... I'm you ticket to threatening people with humiliation?"

"Yes," Chuck said. "But I do keep you around for other reasons."

"You romantic, you," Ryan said, rolling his eyes as he laid his head back down. His phone buzzed on the nightstand, and he sighed, not wanting to answer it but knowing he should. As he started to push himself up again, Chuck grabbed the phone and read the display. "Who is it?" he asked, rolling over onto his back.

Ryan sighed again, but held out his hand, glaring at Chuck when the other man hesitated. Once the phone was in hand, he answered. "Hey."

"Are you avoiding our calls?" Kirsten asked immediately.

"I'm tired of hearing about how I don't know what's best for me," Ryan replied, his voice quiet, tired. He looked up at Chuck, smiling slightly as the other man brushed a hand through his hair in what anyone else might mistake for an absent motion.

"Ryan, we're just worried that this is all too much stress..."

"Sitting around the house hearing about how I should forgive Marissa..." Ryan began, eyes closing. "That's stress inducing. Sitting around a living room in Manhattan playign scrabble with my newfound parents and four younger siblings? Completely not stressful."

"Ryan..." Kirsten began.

"You think you know what's best for me, but it's not what I want, let alone what I think I need," Ryan said, sitting up.

"You don't know what you need," Kirsten said. "If you did, you would be home..."

"Maybe I am," Ryan said.

"Maybe this is where I should be, maybe... maybe I should see about transferring my credits..."

"You don't mean that..."

"I'm staying through the holidays," Ryan said. "I already decided. I'm... I'm staying for a while."

"They accept me for who I am, Kirsten."

"So do..."

"No, you don't," Ryan said, knowing that despite his best efforts to keep calm, the tension was leaking into his tone by how Chuck moved to sit beside him, one hand on his leg and the other on his back. "You... you keep pushing me to be with someone who keeps ripping my heart out and throwing it to the sharks to tear up some more. The... and when I found someone that I was actually happy being with, you did everything you could to make sure it ended."

"What are you talking about?" Kirsten said.

"I was happy when I was with Chuck," Ryan said.

"No, you weren't..." Kirsten began.

"If you think that, then you don't know anything about me, Kirsten," Ryan said. "I shouldn't have answered."

"I'm not going back to Newport for Chrismukkah," Ryan said firmly, trying to draw some strength and confidence from Chuck's presence. "I'm going to look into transferring my credits to a school here. Please... please stop calling me so much. As long as I'm getting a dozen messages a day from you three, I'm not gonna listen to them, I'm just gonna delete them all. Because I can't keep hearing about how I need to come home because this is bad for me, or because Seth needs me to keep the pressure off him... hey, there's an idea, why don't you focus on the fact that your son is screwing Anna even though he's supposedly engaged to Summer," Ryan concluded, ending the call. After he did, he froze, realizing what he had just done. "Fuck."

"Seth Cohen has two women?" Chuck asked. "How the hell does Seth Cohen get two women at once?"

"Summer doesn't know," Ryan said, dialing his friend immediately. "Shit, I can't believe I did that... she's never gonna..."

"It's not your fault that..."

"Summer!" Ryan said, ignoring Chuck. "I'm sorry, I should have told you instead of blurting it out to Kirsten to piss her off because she pissed me off..."

"Blurting out what, Atwood?" Summer said. "And is it why Kirsten and Sandy are now arguing in the kitchen?"

"Seth's cheating on you," Ryan said. "He's been seeing Anna for months, and I'm sorry I didn't tell you, but I gave my word to him, and I just wanted to get Kirsten off my back about Chuck and it slipped out and I'm sorry..."

"He what?" Summer asked.

"He's been seeing Anna for months," Ryan repeated.

"He's a dead man," Summer said. "Or at least a castrated one."

"I know someone who has a jet at their disposal who might be willing to get you out of the country after the murder," Ryan offered.

"I might take you up on that," Summer said. "I'll call you later, Chino. And don't worry, I'm not pissed at you, because you understand things like loyalty and fidelity unlike Cohen!" The last part was yelled, and clearly directed at Seth judging by the stammering in the background just before the call ended.

"Well, now that I've imploded Newport..."

"How does Seth Cohen get two women?" Chuck repeated.

Ryan looked over at his lover, trying not to laugh even though his shoulders were shaking. "Oh God," he said.

"Is this Anna as crazy as I know Summer Roberts is?" Chuck continued, a small smile showing as Ryan laughed, the tension slowly fading from his shoulders. "It's the only reasonable explanation for not one but two women wanting that... is he drugging them?"

Ryan lost it entirely then, bursting out laughing, and Chuck grinned, considering his mission accomplished for the moment.

To Be Continued...

The plot thickens regarding Ryan and his meds! I will say this now because I don't want it being misinterpreted. Ryan is NOT addicted to the pills. He's just in a lot more pain than he's letting on to anyone, including his doctor in Newport (because the Cohens wouldn't let him see the doctor alone, and he didn't want to worry them, so he downplayed the pain even though that's REALLY stupid of him to do...) And taking an extra pill or two, while a VERY BAD IDEA and NOT GOOD FOR HIM AT ALL, is the only way he can really be pain free and sleep peacefully. Hence last chapter with how he 'poured a couple' of pills into his hand... he's suppose to take 2, he's taking 3 or 4 to get a goodnight's sleep.

The whole Summer/Seth/Anna thing... It just popped into my head... heehee... I jsut couldn't reisst when Chuck's reaction sprung to mind...

Holy crap... this chapter? Is 9 pages long... 3,027 words... so far, the entire story is 32 pages/10,108 words... holy crap... lol

I love that Chuck focuses on the important things- how does Seth get two women? LOL.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Ryan goes to a doctor and is *honest* so that he can start to get better. Masking his pain will not make an injury go away (speaking from experience here)

When the plot thickens, it really thickens - it`s like ice cream now.

Mmmm, Ryan, Chuck and a box of ice cream.

Aaaaanyway, great chapter Mara. I hope we get more of Summer attacking Seth - that`s always good for a giggle. :) Oh, and Summer & Ryan friendship to make me go `awwww`.
