Beautiful World - Part Six
The OC/Gossip Girl.
Ryan/Chuck Slash.
Nana Awesomeness.

There's also, at the very end, after the chapter, some kinda spoiler-y ranting about last nights GG. It doesn't specify what happened, but... yeah. It's kinda spoiler-y.

Ryan was back at his hotel room to change before lunch with Lily and Rufus, when someone knocked on the door. He sighed and crossed to the door, buttoning his shirt as he went, rapidly getting annoyed by the insistent pounding. "What?" he snapped as he opened it to find Blair on the other side. "What are you doing here?"

"Why?" Blair demanded. "Why would Chuck dump me for you?"

"Blair..." Ryan began.

"He's obsessed over me for years. He seduced me in the back of his limo while I was still dating his best friend, risking that friendship entirely..."

"Why?" Blair repeated.

"I don't know," Ryan admitted. "I honestly don't. Hell, he told me about you when we were together in Newport, how he was in love with you but you were in love with Nate. But... I have dated two rich, spoiled, greedy, selfish people. One of them repeatedly ripped my heart to shreds, and the other was Chuck. So I don't know why he chose me, but I'm glad he did." He paused, sighing. "Look, I am so sorry that you got hurt in all this. You didn't deserve it."

"You have no idea what you've done," Blair insisted.

"I'm sorry," Ryan repeated.

"No, you aren't. Not yet anyway," Blair replied before turning and storming off.

"What a pleasant girl."

Ryan paused in closing the door and stuck his head out, smiling. "Nana," he greeted, genuinely surprised, but pleased, to see her. They'd gotten much closer after his accident, when she'd come to Newport to offer them all emotional support as he recovered. "What are you doing here? I was gonna go see you tomorrow..."

"Well, I got a call from Sandy about how he was worried about your mental health, that you were talking about 'that boy' from a few years ago..." Sophie said as she walked into the hotel room and sat down in a worn chair.

"Oh geez," Ryan said.

"I take it you've seen him?"

"Irony of ironies, Chuck's dad? Was married to my birth-mother for the last almost year of his life."

"You're kidding."

"Nope," Ryan said. "So, the whole Van Der Woodsen-Humphrey clan knows Chuck. And they've had some less than stellar interactions with him."

"Do they know?"

"About me and Chuck? Yeah, I kinda had to tell them. See, Chuck's girlfriend saw Chuck put his hand on my lower back, and then she busts into Chuck's office, and my shirt is rumbled..."

"Ryan!" Sophie protested, pretending to be scandalized by the very idea.

"Get your mind out of the gutter, I'd told him about the accident and he asked to see the scars," Ryan said, smiling even as he blushed slightly. "We hadn't done anything but talk. But she assumed otherwise. Problem is, she's also the best friend of one of my new found sisters, Serena. So, Serena brings Blair over because she'd had a bad day, Blair sees me, and she blabs to everyone."

"How'd that go?" Sophie asked.

"With warnings that Chuck is a pig, and hurts people," Ryan said. "But also acknowledgement that he's come through for the people he cares about when they most needed him."

"And how did the the whole 'Ryan plays for both teams' thing go over?"

"Well, since my new found youngest brother is gay, they were fine with it."

"Good, or I'd have to bust some rich people's heads," Sophie said.

"They're far more bothered by it being Chuck that I'm involved with than it being a guy."

"Involved, present tense?"

Ryan nodded. "He told me that if he thought it would work, he'd choose me. And when I decided that I needed to do what I thought was best for me instead of what Sandy and Kirsten thought was best, I told him that I wanted it to work. So... he ended things with Blair."

"Was that the girl storming off?" Sophie asked.

"Pretty, but she clearly can't compete with my grandson."

"I think you'd like Chuck," Ryan said. "I mean, if you could get past the whole 'he's incredibly rich and arrogant' thing."

"Are you happy with him?"

"Yeah, I am. And I was back then, even if Kirsten and Sandy don't wanna believe that."

"Would he do to you what that skinny thing did?" Sophie asked, unable to keep the disgust out of her voice.

"No, I don't think he would," Ryan said. "I mean, he's pretty far from a saint, but... I think with me at least he'd have the decency to be honest. Plus, he knows I'd kick his ass if he cheated on me."

"I get second dibs," Sophie said.

"Deal," Ryan said. "I'll let him know to be very afraid."

"If you're happy, these people are good to you, you think this is where you need to be, and it's where you want to be? Then I am 100% behind you."

"Thanks, Nana," Ryan said. "I'm glad someone is."

"They're just worried they're gonna lose you," Sophie said.

"They won't," Ryan insisted. "Unless they keep pushing at me. I... they want me to forgive Marissa, since it wasn't really her fault. And I need to go back because Sandy and Kirsten are smothering Seth. And... I can't handle that right now. I just... I can't. What wrong with me wanting to know my birth-parents and my half siblings? They didn't give me up because they didn't want me. Lily was talked into it by her mother, and Rufus didn't even know I existed until a couple years ago. And... and they want me. They actually want me."

"I'm glad, Ryan, but you know Sandy and Kirsten love you."

"I know, but... I'm always gonna be that punk car thief in Newport. Here... I'm Lily and Rufus Humphrey's son. I'm Serena, Dan, Eric, and Jenny's brother. As weird as it sounds, I feel like maybe I belong. I mean, not on the upper east side, I'm not gonna fit in there any better than I did in Newport, but... with them? With my whole new found family? I feel like I belong."

"Good," Sophie said. reaching out to grasp his hand tightly in her own. "I'm really happy for you."

"You wanna hear the weird part?" Ryan asked.

"Lily is to Kirsten, what Kirsten is to Dawn," Ryan said. "I mean, I thought Kirsten was pretty much as classy as they come, but... Lily is... wow."

"Oh, see, now I'm gonna have to rub that in Kirsten's face," Sophie teased, smiling as Ryan laughed.

"They live in the Palace Hotel," Ryan said. "And I'm pretty sure that any one piece of jewelry that Lily or Serena own? Is worth more than my old house in Chino."

"The tabloid stories about that family, let me tell you," Sophie said.

"I'm really glad you came by," Ryan said.

"I'm good at knowing when I'm needed," Sophia said. "But you look like you were getting ready to go somewhere."

"Lunch with Lily and Rufus," Ryan said. "Lily got the names and numbers for some Spinal Cord specialists here in New York, since I plan on staying at least through the holidays, maybe longer."

"You better come see me at least on the first and last nights of Hannakuh," Sophie said.

"I promise."

"Good," Sophie said. "Well, I should leave so you can finish getting ready. Don't worry about coming tomorrow," she added as he helped her up.

"Hey, I promised I'd be there, and I will be," Ryan said. "I'm here anyway, and you shouldn't have to start a new round of chemo alone."

"That is why you're my favorite grandson," Sophie said, kissing his cheek. "I'll see you tomorrow at 11."

"Tomorrow at 11," Ryan promised.

"You look relaxed," Rufus commented as Ryan arrived at the penthouse.

"I got a visit from 'The Nana'," Ryan said, smiling. "My foster dad's mother. She likes people to think she's mean, but... she's always been nice to me. And she's a firm believer that Marissa sucks and I deserve better. Even if the better is a guy Sandy and Kirsten hate."

"Yeah, I'm... with Chuck," Ryan admitted. "I know he's not your favorite person, but... at least he's honest about who he is. My ex-girlfriend, Marissa? She does everything she can to make people think she's this sweet little innocent victim, when she's about as far from it as possible. Chuck openly admits to having problems with fidelity, but he knows if he cheats on me, I'll kick his ass. And The Nana has dibs after me," he said.

"I think I like this woman."

"What woman?" Lily asked as she entered the living room. "I have the list for you," she added to Ryan, handing it to him.

"The Nana," Rufus said. "She's Mr. Cohen's mother, and apparently she has dibs, after Ryan, for making Chuck regret it if he cheats."

"The Nana agrees that if this is where I want to be and where I think I need to be, then I should be here," Ryan added. "I think she's the only one, besides you guys, who agrees with me on that."

"Then I think I like her, too," Lily said. "She should come for brunch sometime."

"That... probably wouldn't work too well," Ryan said. "The Nana kinda... takes issue with people who have lots of money and show it," he explained, gesturing. "Sandy and Kirsten have been married for twenty years and The Nana still complains about them living in a mansion in Newport, I really don't wanna know how she'd react to this place."

"Maybe coffee in Brooklyn sometime," Rufus suggested.

"That could work," Ryan said. "Or the Bronx, since that's her home territory."

"Why not tomorrow?" Lily said.

"She can't," Ryan said quickly. "She's got work. But I'll talk to her about it."

"Come on, let's eat," Rufus said. "I made sure there's normal food," he added.

"Thank you," Ryan replied, relieved. "I just don't get the whole tiny sandwiches with weird stuff in and on them thing. I was starving after that party the other night."

"Neither do I," Rufus admitted. "I'm never gonna get used to those things."

To Be Continued...

I'm slightly iffy on the very first part, with Blair confronting Ryan, but... she's spinning. Chuck has just left her for a guy, and as far as she's concerned it's random and out of the blue. She's never heard about Ryan, so she can't figure out how he could be important enough to Chuck that he would dump HER in favor of Ryan. I do, however, love the whole Ryan & The Nana scene.

Big space so you can stop before seeing anything spoiler-y for last night's ep of GG...

I'm still not happy about the most recent ep of Gossip Girl, and it pisses me off that just as I get back to writing this, they had to make me so pissed at Chuck. I mean, it helps my Dan/Blair shipper heart, but... I don't like hating Chuck.

I just want to make it clear that I find Chuck's actions in ep 4x20 of GG completely deplorable, and as much as I love him, I'm not gonna excuse his actions, or forgive/forget them anytime soon. HOWEVER, I am capable of pretending stuff didn't happen, at least for the sake of fics like this one. BW takes place around mid-season 3 of GG, so before his last year or so of horrible actions (No trading Blair to Jack, no sleeping with Jenny, no 4x20 horribleness), and for the sake of it, I will be ignoring everything after early season 3. Other fics, most notably my Dan/Blair fics, will use the events of 4x20, but not this fic or any other where Chuck is meant to be a good guy.

Hopefully that all makes sense. I really don't wanna be lumped in with the rabid Chuck fans who are excusing his actions and even going so far as to say Blair deserved it. No, she didn't, and it's disgusting to me that in this day and age, ANYONE could even THINK of saying such a thing.

Love the Nana...not sure why Ryan's holding out on telling the rents about the Nana's chemotherapy. Happy to see that the relationship with the Cohens is not toast...just in a rough spot. Will be interesting to see the attempted Blair smack down and who ends up smacking her back.... Could see Summer visiting (to get away from Seth)and taking her on. Alternately I could see Seth showing up begging forgiveness for being an ass and somehow redeeming himself.
