24 Gifts 2011 - Day Six - Beach (Ryan/Chuck Snippet)
More backstory of 'Beautiful World', taking place the summer Chuck spent in Newport that lead to he and Ryan's relationship.

Chuck had left the Bass' rented beach house hoping to find a diversion from the lectures his father had been giving him and the dirty looks he'd gotten from the men Bart was doing business with, and when he spotted Ryan sitting on the beach, he'd though he'd found a good one. Even if he couldn't successfully seduce Ryan, he'd enjoyed facing off with someone who immediately saw right through him. He paused though, as he got close enough to see that Ryan was sitting close enough for the waves to lap at his feet and he had a bottle of something, wine maybe, dangling from one hand.

"You were right."

Chuck was startled by Ryan's voice, and frowned. "About what?"

"Marissa," Ryan said, taking a swig from the bottle. "I asked her if she though I'd screwed up her life, if she blamed me for what Trey did... and she admitted it. She said she wished I'd never come to Newport."

"She's a bitch."

"She's right."

"I doubt that."

"I ruin everything I touch."

"I highly doubt that," Chuck said, sliding off his shoes and sinking down into the sand.

"Everyone was fine before I came here. They were happy. Now Marissa has been in and out of rehab, and Seth can't seem to stop cheating on his girlfriend, and Kirsten's suppose to be in rehab, but she came back because of Trey, and now she's drinking again..."

"Who's Trey?" Chuck asked.

"My brother. Biological brother. He... he tried to rape Marissa, and when I found out, I went to kick his ass. Except he's always been a better fighter than me, so... he had his hands around my throat and was about to smash my head in when Marissa showed up, and she saw Trey's gun..."

"She shot him?"

"In the back," Ryan whispered. "He's been in a coma ever since. He may not wake up. And the cops aren't sure whether they suspect me or Marissa, and... and Kirsten's drinking again. And it's like two years ago all over again. Like any day now, she's gonna tell me that I'm too much trouble and I need to go, even though I have nowhere to go."

Chuck was silent, thinking of his own experience with a parent who didn't seem to want him most of the time. "Is that why you live with them?"

"My mother chose her asshole boyfriend over me. Again."

"I'm sure it won't happen again," Chuck said.

"I wish I was," Ryan said, taking another swig from the bottle. "I shoulda grabbed two," he continued, eyeing the remaining bit of wine. "Then I could offer you some," he added, upending the bottle one final time.

As the bottle lowered, Chuck moved forward, pulling Ryan into a kiss before he could swallow the wine. After a moment, he pulled back again, smirking as he licked his lips. "I've had far superior wines," he said. "But never served so well," he added.

Ryan stared at him for a moment, then laughed. "That has got to be one of the worst pick up lines I've ever heard," he said. "And that includes some of my brothers lines"

"You're sitting on the beach, drunk off your ass, you just let me kiss you without any indication of reluctance, and you're going to criticize my seduction technique?" Chuck asked. "I'd say I succeeded."

"Shows how drunk I am that I let you get away with that," Ryan countered. "And that I blurted out all of that."

"Your secret's safe with me," Chuck said.

Ryan raised an eyebrow. "I am suppose to believe that?"

"If I betray your trust, I'll never manage to fully seduce you," Chuck replied with a smirk.

"You'll never manage regardless."

"We'll see."

"I've had far superior wines," he said. "But never served so well," he added.

Best line I've read in a long while.
