Pick-A-Prompt Fic - "I'm Sorry, Kid" - Prompt #13
So, late last night I posted THIS. Basically either you can challenge me or you can accept my challenge, either way you pick a number and a fic will be written by someone. Well, garnigal was the first response and I was challenged to use prompt #13 and write The OC fic. Here is that fic.

Prompt #13 - I'm Sorry, Kid.

"I'm sorry, kid," Sandy said. "I've tried everything, but... they're going forward with the original charges."

"No, it's... it's okay," Ryan replied, nodding. "I mean, I didn't really expect you to be able to do much. Jimmy may have been a fuck up, but his parents are still rich and powerful, and I let their granddaughter die. Of course I'm gonna end up in jail for it."

"The accident was not your fault."

"That... doesn't even matter, Sandy," Ryan said. "It doesn't matter because there's no evidence that the crash was caused by anyone but me. My truck was too banged up from rolling over to see any dents from Volchak ramming us. Too burned from the fire to find any stray paint. Only one set of tire tracks on the higher road, because he never hit his breaks, but I did. So it doesn't matter what actually happened. Just what it looks like. Which is that I was drunk, I got behind the wheel, I lost control of the truck, and I killed an innocent girl."

"Your blood test..."

"Was clear," Ryan agreed. "When they tested it almost twelve hours after we said good bye to Seth and Summer. Which we did at a model home we broke into so we could party. Come on, if you were a prosecutor, judge, or jury, if you didn't know me, you would think I'd been drinking and been stupid. I can't even blame anyone for that..."

"Well, I can!" Sandy protested. "I'm not giving up on you, Ryan."

"That makes one of us," Ryan replied. "How's Kirsten?"

"She's worried about you."

"I don't want her coming to the courthouse," Ryan said firmly. "I... I don't want her there."

"She wants to be there. She wants to come see you..."

"No," Ryan said. "You are the only one I put on my visitor list, only person I'll see. If she shows up, they'll turn her away."

"Which is why she's going to be at the courthouse everyday of your trial," Sandy said. "It'll be her only chance to see you in close to a year."

"She loves you, kid. You're her son in everyway that matters, and you refuse to see her."

"I don't want her seeing me here," Ryan replied. "It was bad enough when she brought Seth to see me after the model home fire, but... that was Juvie. This is prison. I don't want her here, around these guys... I won't subject her to it."

"And everyday that goes by without her seeing you, she gets more worried about you," Sandy pointed out. "That's not good for her right now."

"Is the baby okay?" Ryan asked, worried.

"You're little sister is doing fine," Sandy replied, unable to keep back a small smile.

"A girl? That's great. Kirsten must be thrilled."

"Yeah, she is," Sandy said. "About that, anyway."

"She's going to be at the courthouse. I couldn't stop her if I tried, and frankly? I'm kind of scared to try and keep her from seeing one of her kids right now."

"Just... don't let her be in the courtroom when I'm on the stand," Ryan said. "I don't... I know the prosecutor will bring up my father's murder conviction, and I don't... I don't want Kirsten in there when it happens."

Sandy nodded. "I'll try," he promised.

"How's Seth doing at RISD?"

"New girlfriend every week," Sandy said, shaking his head. "All petite brunettes with anger issues."

"Gee, I wonder why," Ryan replied dryly.

The End

Ack! Poor Ryan. You've got to write more - get him off, somehow.

Also, I've missed your writing!

Trust me, at some point, there will be more. There are even a couple more of the prompts in the challenge... that would easily work into fics for this new 'verse... lol... you could always challenge me again to try and get more quicker... lol

Okay, I couldn't resist reading. Ouch. You sure know how to tear a heart out, but completely in character. All of poor Ryan's lack of self-worth and full-blown guilt on center stage as he tries to fade into the background, believing he never deserved a chance at a level playing field or a life at all. Sniff. The Ryan and Sandy bond is paramount, no matter what.

Missed you, even when it hurts!

Sandy, at least in this universe, will NEVER give up on Ryan. He will literally be fighting until the day Ryan's released. And Ryan... god... he knows he's innocent, he knows he's not really responsible for Marissa's death, but he's a realist and knows that very few people are on his side in this. Most of the shit with Volchak wasn't public knowledge, so it seems to most people like Ryan is blaming some random guy the dead girl dated for a few weeks who'd have no reason to run them off the road.

Poor guy just can't catch a break.
