24 Gifts Of 2016 - Day One - Evolution (Ryan & Summer Friendship)
Sorry this is being posted so late. I do the inventory at work, so yesterday I counted everything, a nine hour shift of nothing but counting every single item in the store. Then our inventory recorder errored. I checked it twice after errors and the inventory was still there. I called Tech Support, we tried a bunch of different fixes, and I checked and the inventory was still on the recorder. Then the tech took remote control of the computer, and did something that when I saw I told him "That'll erase it!" he swore up an down that no it wouldn't. Guess what? It erased it. Nine hours of work completely gone. So I was at work until 3:37am last night recounting everything. Didn't get to sleep until after 5am because I was so wound up... slept half the day and still feel worn out. Ugh...

Anyway! December 1st means it's time for the first gift! This is a Ryan and Summer friendship fic, it takes place when they are seniors in college, but they all ended up going to schools in the Berkeley Area, so they are close to each other.

Ryan opened the door to his apartment and froze. "Summer?" he asked the dripping wet young woman.

Summer nodded, arms wrapped around her middle and her face red and splotchy from crying. "I didn't know where else to go," she whispered.

"Come on," Ryan said, pulling her inside and grabbing his hoodie from it's hok near the door to wrap it around her shoulders. "You're soaked," he said.

"I took the bus and the stop was like two blocks from here..." Summer said.

"Summer Roberts took the bus?" Ryan asked, not even trying to hide a teasing smile.

"Yes, I took a bus," Summer confirmed. "I broke up with Seth."

"Okay," Ryan said, nodding. He'd seen it coming for a while, so he wasn't surprised, just sad. "You want some coffee? Or... hot chocolate?"

"Hot chocolate?" Summer asked.

"You got it," Ryan agreed, starting to turn, then turning back and pressing a kiss to the top of her head. "It'll be okay, Sum," he added as he headed into the kitchen.

"Sure, Chino."

Ryan poured milk into a pan to warm it, then got a mug ready. "You wanna talk about it?"

"He hasn't gone to class in like a month, and when I got home today he was high. Again. Maybe still," Summer said, pulling the hoodie tight around her as she shivered slightly. "So... I told him that he had to chose. What was more important to him, the drugs or me. He said he needed a smoke and lit up. I told him we were done and I went to pack a bag but he wouldn't let me in our room, so... I just turned and walked out."

"I can take you to get your stuff tomorrow," Ryan said. "And you can crash here as long as you need to."

"Thanks, Chino."

"Anytime," Ryan said. "I know how hard it is deal with an addict, and how it's even harder to walk away from one."

"He thinks..." Summer began, then trailed off.

"He thinks you and I are... a thing. Sleeping together."

Ryan snorted. "Seriously? I mean... really? He's going to accuse you when he's the one who's kissed other girls while dating you?"

"Apparently, you are a manwhore and I'm just a whore," Summer said, shrugging.

"And he's an idiot."

"Well... duh," Summer said, smiling slightly. "Thanks, Chino."

"Anytime, Summer."

The End

Spoiler alert... this is the first of several connected gift stories that tell the story of how Ryan and Summer's relationship evolves from friends to more. It won't be Seth or Cohen friendly in general, but Neil Roberts will be, as always, awesome.

I like the idea of seeing Summer and Ryan's relationship evolving like you described. It has me wondering how Kirsten, Sandy and Sophie Rose, if she's in this series, will react to what happened.
