24 Gifts Of 2016 - Day Six - Evolution 2 (Ryan & Summer)
Another part of the story that follows how Ryan and Summer's friendship grows and changes post-series. Not Seth friendly.

Evolution 2

A few weeks after Summer first showed up on his doorstep, Ryan walked into his apartment and found her sitting on his couch, wearing his hoodie.

"Hey," he greeted her as he set down his computer bag. "What's up?"

"I really need a friend right now, and there's no one else I can go to," Summer said.

"You know I've got you," Ryan replied, going to sit down at the other end of the couch. "What's wrong?"

"I'm... I'm pregnant."

Ryan stared at her in silence for a moment. "Oh..." he finally said.

"It's Seth's, obviously... but I can't... I mean he... I went to see him, I was going to tell him, and ask him to stop using for my sake, and the baby's, and he just... he was high. And I asked him... I asked him why he won't stop, and he... he said the drugs make him happy. And I asked what about me, and he... he said all I does is bitch about him and ruin his high. I asked what he would have done if I'd gotten pregnant, if he would have stopped, and he said no... I can't... I won't... let my kid have a junkie for a dad..."

"You shouldn't," Ryan agreed. "I grew up with that, and it's... it's not a good life."

"Exactly. It's a miracle you turned out so... you. I'm not gambling on my child's happiness and security. I guess maybe I don't love him as much as I thought."

"No, you just love your kid more," Ryan said. "That's a good thing, Sum. No matter what you decide about the baby, it says a lot of good about you, that your kid is the one that matters in this. Not Seth, not how you feel about Seth, but the kid."

Summer nodded. "Why couldn't I have... why couldn't you and I have gotten together? I doubt I'd feel so alone right now if you were the dad."

Ryan held out an arm and Summer curled against his side, the two of them sitting in silence for a few moments. "What are you gonna do? Do you know?"

"I want my baby," Summer replied. "But I don't want Seth's baby."

"Then don't have his," Ryan said.

"He's already convinced you and me have a... thing. Why deny it? I... I don't mind letting people think... if it protects a kid from a junkie of a father, I'll take the hit for having an affair with my brother's fiancee."

"Summer, the last few years? You've been the better friend to me than he has," Ryan said. "And I... I mean it's up to you, because if we do this, if we tell people it's mine, people are going to judge you pretty badly, but..."

"I could do worse for a fake baby daddy," Summer said. "But, I really can't ask..."

"You're not, it was my idea," Ryan interrupted. "And when I say this, you need to know I mean it. I will be as much of a father to this baby as you want me to be. If you just want to put my name on the birth certificate and that's it? Fine. But I am willing to... to be a dad, if that's okay with you."

"You'd be a dad? To someone else's kid?"

"I was ready to do it when Theresa pregnant," Ryan said. "I knew the kid was most likely Eddie's. But she needed me, so... I was gonna be a dad."

"We could do a lot worse, huh?" Summer said, putting a hand on her still flat stomach and looking down at it. "Thank you."

Ryan nodded and pulled her close again, kissing the top of her head. "I've got you, Sum. Both of you."

"I have to tell my dad the truth," Summer said. "I can't lie to him about this."

"He won't tell anyone when I explain everything, and he'll be less angry at you for breaking up my engagement if he knows you're actually my knight in shining armor."

"More like tarnished and rusty, but... okay," Ryan said, smiling.

"Ryan, don't get me wrong, I appreciate you doing this for Summer, but are you sure you really want to?" Neil Roberts asked. "It's a lot of responsibility, and it will affect your relationship with the Cohens..."

"I know," Ryan said. "But... I'm not in love with your daughter, but I do love her. She's my best friend, and... I've sorta given up on relationships. Mine never end well for me or for the girl. So... we already talked about it. We'll be a couple, but if one of us meets someone else? It's an amnicable split."

Neil nodded. "As long as you both realize the consequences, I'll help however I can. With what Summer told me earlier, you for a fake father is the better option than the real one."

"I'll do my best for both of them," Ryan promised.

"I know you will, son."

"Sorry, I guess morning sickness starts early," Summer said as she returned, wiping her mouth with a paper towel.

"We'll stop at the store before I drop you off at your place," Ryan said. "Ginger chews help with nausuea."

"Yeah, I think you can convince people," Neil said, amused. "You sound like a doting dad-to-be," he added.

Summer leaned against Ryan, who wrapped an arm around her shoulders. "In a way he is. The deal is, he will by the dad in all ways. This baby will have the best dad possible."

I wasn't expecting Summer to have a baby, but the reaction of everyone will be interesting. I'm looking forward to how Kirsten reacts most, for some reason.

I was wondering, is Caleb alive in this series?
